The First Step

Before I could ever get waste deep in church planting or see the first drop of sweet fall from my fitness journey I had to take my first step.  This may not seem like a huge revelation to you but it’s worth discussing.  What is this ‘first step’.  Well I like to define it as the tipping point where motivation exceeds any plausible excuse.  Once we hit this point we begin our journey towards something amazing.  For me this was the phone call to engage the good folks at DRiV fitness.  My goal of running faster and harder seemed doable after a good chat with my future coaches.  This step lead to another step… this next step was to simply show up.  That’s right…SHOW UP.  The biggest challenge to our physical and spiritual journeys revolve around consistency.  SHOWING up is consistency.  Showing up at the gym at 5:45am requires a commitment.  Similarly, waking up everyday to work on the call that God has called me to requires a commitment to seek and follow Him.

At the end of every goal that has been achieved is numerous steps and a steady cadence.  Whether you are contemplating beginning a fitness journey or something different, just remember that it’s step by step and day by day.  Even though I have over 10 marathons under my belt I stilled opted to enter my crossfit journey via a gateway.  I did two things that helped me prepare (you may not need to do this).  First, I participated in bootcamps for several months.  These workouts were core intensive and were critical for me strengthening my core for functional fitness.  Second, I was part of #FitByFirst.  This is a community of fitness folks led by Carlos Whitaker.  Check out his BLOG for the details.  His work outs (inspired by crossfit) really challenged me to find those fast twitch muscles!

I seriously hope you are considering taking a step.  I believe that stepping out boldly on a journey is one of the most rewarding things you can do with you life.  I know 6 months from now I will be blown away at how my body responds to crossfit.  Similarly I know 6 months from now I will be blown away by following God’s call on my life.  My life will be changed and those who I am in a tribe with will be changed to.  It’s a double win!

So what are you waiting for?…Take that FIRST STEP!
