Choosing to get up.

As I continue to add additional cross-fit workouts and additional mileage to my fitness schedule I find that my body has moments where it is on the verge of a total revolt.  As a person who has run marathons before I am accustomed to the whole idea of just point my nose in the direction that I want to go, and just keep at it.  Cross-fit has begun to challenge this viewpoint.  There is a certain agility that one must possess to appreciate and to grow in the arena of cross-fit.  I have learned over the past few weeks that I love box jumps (thanks HS football coach), most exercise that involved the legs, and anytime we have to run or row; seriously I have a grin when we get to do these things.  I have also learned that over the past few weeks that I have come to dislike pull-ups (my kryptonite), and fast movements such as cling and jerk.  My dislike stems from my inability to do these perfectly (I am somewhat of a perfectionist).

To be honest, I wake up sore almost every day.  From my legs (running) to my upper body.  I especially notice the soreness when we do upper body.  Apparently I have discovered new muscles in my forearms that I did not know existed (I know, welcome to the party).  Apparently they are ‘sensitive’ and express their dissatisfaction of use by producing copious amounts of lactic acid.  In all seriousness, what I have found is that progress towards a goal requires steady and consistent attention.  This starts in the morning for me.  I have to choose to get up.  I am an early riser, but to get up first thing and punish myself everyday requires a certain tenacity.

This season of fitness has paralleled with the reason why my family and I have moved to St. Augustine in April.  As we have begun to move into the pre-launch phase of Awaken City Church we have found that we have to stay focused on the end goal.  We have to choose to get up daily knowing why we are here and more importantly to get after it.  I tell myself daily that if I am breathing oxygen then God is not done with me yet.  The same applies to you.

Whether it’s cross-fit, your job or even school you and I have to choose to get up.   We will experience soreness, we will experience things we like and things we dislike.  The important thing is that we have to continue to drive towards the goal that is before us.   I am so thankful for the many people who have lived in St. Augustine before me…the people who have pioneered this amazing city.  I am enjoying the fruit of their labor that included them have to choose to get up every day.
