Vibram Five Fingers Initial Test

So I picked these up early in the week. My initial thoughts are ‘wow’ and ‘neat’. I wore them around the house to get a feel for them. They felt snug and comfortable.

I decided to wait until the next morning to actually log a run in them. Now, before I get started please note that I am just shy of 6′ 1′, weigh 205 lbs, and typically run in the Brooks Beast for motion control. These shoes are technically not for people like ‘me’. Anyway, I purchased them to not only check them out but at the very least wear them around the house in lieu of the standard issue flip flops.

Immediately, I noticed that I could feel every little crack, pebble and contour of the road. This was not a bad thing as I expected this. I ran 4 miles and really didn’t notice any ‘hot’ spots on my feet at all. My lower legs were a little sore later on the same day. The soreness reminded me of my triathlon days when I would bike and then hit the road running, it was more of a sensation than soreness. My plan is to alternate between these and my Brooks Beast. I will use the five fingers for short runs (5 miles and less) and my Brooks Beast for anything longer. I must note that I did not experience any knee pain or any other issues. The switch did not really seem to impact my form much, again this is review after ‘one’ run.

I will say this about the fit. My right foot is about 0.2 inches longer than my left so I grabbed size 43, but in all honesty I should have bought a 44 for my right foot and a 43 for left. The right foot is a bit snug, but I am going to see what a few more runs do to make the fit a little better.

Overall I am impressed with the shoes. Time may change that but out of the gate they are really worth a look if you think you might want to cross over to barefoot running.
